Music of the Heart

Apparently, when we listen to music or any sound that moves us, our brain is activated, which then opens our mind to exploration and wonder. In this state of awe, we often tear up or experience a ‘thrill chill’. I usually experience both. Do you, too? Oh, the miracle of sentience and synchronicity!

“Music can pierce the heart directly; it needs no mediation.” Oliver Sacks

Music can break down the boundaries between ourselves and others, can transport us back in time, and can unite us in feelings of mutual awe. When we sing or listen to music with others, we sense that we are part of something larger, a community – or what I prefer to call – everyday sojourners synchronised in a sacred symphony.

At this time of the year, watching people – babies in prams, toddlers perched high-up on parent’s shoulders, boisterous boys, giggling girls, dogs on leads, elders with walkers, couples holding hands – gather to sing Christmas carols in church halls, outdoor parks, and school playgrounds – is the stuff of involuntary tears and goosebumps – living proof that music invites and unites, unfurls the ‘thin veiled place’ between heaven and earth, and transports us from what is real to what is possible, and reminds us of God’s plan of redemption since the beginning of time – peace with God for all mankind.

Right now, before you tire of hearing Christmas carols played on auto repeat at the shopping malls, I’d like to share my all-time favourite Christmas carol with you. I can’t guarantee you’ll have goosebumps or be moved to tears, but I can tell you Malinda Kathleen Rees sings ‘Mary did you know?’ with the voice of an angel. Sit back. Close your eyes. Hit the play arrow… Oh wait, you can’t, your eyes are closed. Silly me. Reverse the order. I’ll do the same. Now we’re ready to enjoy the magic of a mutual ‘music moment’ in time.

If that moved you as much as it did me, here’s my second favourite carol sung by heartthrob Josh Groban. My family usually scarper when I turn his music up full volume, but that’s part of the plan to have him all to myself while I sing along with him.

I unintentionally embarrassed my grandchildren when I sang this song solo (yes, with gusto and glee, if you must know) at their school’s carols evening. But, it wasn’t exactly my fault nobody else joined in when the principal extended the invitation. Always the activator, and never one to hold back whenever Christmas carols are being sung, I took it on the chin for the crowd. Sorry? No, not sorry! Actually, this girl can keep a tune. I’m pretty sure Josh Groban agrees, even if my grandson Josh doesn’t!

As we count down the days to Christmas, when you hear these very familiar Christmas carols may you retain a child-like sense of awe and wonder as you allow the words and music to move your heart afresh.

“Glory to God in Heaven, and upon earth peace, Good News to the children of men.” Luke 2:14 ABPE

Dear God,

Of all the sounds of everyday splendour, there is none more thrilling than to hear You call my name, have you desire the intimacy of communion with me. In the morning. In the evening. In sanctuary, I hear You whisper a nickname. You know me inside out. Outside in. How incredible to be so loved. Adored. Cherished. My reply is, “Yes, Abba, ignite my heart, my home, my homeland.” At this time of Christmas let every man and every woman be freed by your Love to love one another … make our words a symphony of shalom. In the morning. In the evening. We can sing of your love forever. Today. Tomorrow. Forever.

Amen
